First words On the move

On the move

Baby sat in a meadowThe progress your baby makes between 7 and 12 months is astonishing. At the beginning of this period, your little one may have just got the hang of sitting upright. By the end, they’ll be crawling and could even be walking.

Crawling
Your baby may start to crawl at around 7 or 8 months old. Once they’re on the move, your next challenge is keeping up. Babies move surprisingly fast, even when crawling, so it’s important to keep a watchful eye. Take stock of your home and remove any possible hazards such as loose cables or objects your baby could knock over.

First steps, with support
At about 8 months, your baby may start to pull himself to standing while holding onto furniture. As they gain in confidence, your baby will start to take their first steps, moving from one piece of furniture to another. Eventually, they’ll be able to let go and stand all on their own.

Sitting down
Your baby’s next challenge will be learning to bend the knees and sit down after standing. By 11 months, your baby may be able to stand and squat on their own. They may even be able to walk while holding your hand.

Going solo
When your little one actually takes their first solo steps varies enormously. Some babies walk at 13 months, others at 17 months. The important thing is not to worry – your baby will walk when they’re ready.

Whenever it happens, it’s a huge milestone in your baby’s development. For the very first time, your baby can stand and walk around independently. It’s a massive achievement and a stepping-stone from babyhood to being a toddler.
